Why Imran Khan suspended?
Imran Khan was removed from politics by Pakistan’s Election Commission on Friday after allegations that he mislead officials about gifts he received from foreign leaders while in office.
According to the Dawn, Imran Khan has been barred from running for office for five years under Article 63(i)(iii) for making a false statement in the Toshakhana reference case.
At the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad, a four-member bench presided over by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja announced the decision, according to the Dawn.
Fawad Chaudhry, an aide to Imran Khan, declared that the PTI would appeal the ECP’s decision to the Supreme Court.
Imran Khan took over in 2018 and is said to have accepted expensive gifts from wealthy Arab leaders. Those gifts were during official visits left in the Toshakhana.
According to the applicable laws, I purchased it at a discount and profitably sold it.
All gifts must disclose by Public officials, but those worth less than a certain amount may be kept.
More pricey items must be sent to Toshakhana. But in some cases, the recipient may be able to purchase them back at a discount of approximately 50% of their value, which Khan increased from 20% while in office. They included designer handbags, perfumes, jewelry, and expensive watches.
The Toshakhana was established in 1974. It is a division under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division. It houses priceless gifts that foreign dignitaries and heads of other governments and states have given to rulers, lawmakers, bureaucrats, and officials.
PTI not accepting ‘minus one formula’
During today’s press conference, senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi discussed the constitutional role of the ECP. He also stated that the “minus one formula will not be acceptable.”
Strict Security at ECP
Tight security has been put in place around the area, especially around the ECP building and the red zone. It is due to concerns about the arrival of PTI employees or potential disruption.
Following the decision, the police in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been placed on high alert, with significant deployments near the Red Zone and the Faizabad Interchange.
Additionally, FC and Rangers members have been deployed for security near government buildings in addition to the police.
The crew had already received tear gas shells and other essential supplies.
The Islamabad administration had deployed 1,500 policemen, including one SSP, five SPs, and six DSPs to the premises. They provide security prior to the announcement of the judgment.
